Beimen
Tainan, Taiwan
Why visit Beimen?
Beimen (北門) is a coastal district in the northwest of Tainan special municipality, on the southwestern shore of Taiwan. Its name means "north gate," and like its neighbour Qigu it is a low, flat landscape of old salt fields, fish farms, lagoons and wetlands. For generations Beimen was a centre of salt production, and the geometric patchwork of disused salt pans, together with weathered salt-industry buildings, still gives the district a distinctive, quietly atmospheric look.
Beimen's appeal lies in its scenery, its history and its wildlife. The coastal wetlands are an important wintering ground for migratory birds, and the district has a poignant medical-history association: it was one of the areas badly affected by "blackfoot disease," a circulatory illness linked to arsenic-contaminated well water in the mid-20th century, commemorated today in a small memorial museum. In recent years Beimen has reinvented itself as a leisure destination, anchored by a popular waterfront recreation area and the much-photographed white "Crystal Church."
This is a half-day to full-day destination, usually visited as a side trip along the Tainan coast. The climate is tropical: the dry, cool season (roughly November to April) is the best time to come — comfortable, less rainy, and overlapping with the migratory bird season. Summers are hot, humid and wet with a typhoon risk. Beimen is a spread-out rural district of small villages rather than a single town.

By Plane
Tainan Airport (TNN) is the nearest airport, with domestic flights to Kinmen and Penghu and some Hong Kong service. For wider connections, Kaohsiung International Airport is the main option, and Tainan is also reachable from Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport by HSR.
By Car / Road
Beimen is best reached by road along the Tainan coast, north of central Tainan; driving takes roughly an hour. From Kaohsiung allow around 1.5–2 hours. A Taiwan Tourist Shuttle route serves the Beimen/Jiangjun coastal area on certain days, and local buses connect the district with Tainan, though services are infrequent — a car or organised tour is far more practical.
Beimen is a spread-out rural district with minimal internal public transport, so a car, scooter or organised tour is needed to move between the salt fields, the recreation area and the birdwatching wetlands. Once at a specific site, exploration is on foot. The flat, quiet coastal lanes are pleasant for cycling, and bicycles can be a good way to take in the salt-pan landscape near the visitor areas.
What are the things to do?
Beimen Crystal Church (北門水晶教堂) — a small, all-white, glass-and-steel chapel-style structure set beside the water; not a working church but a hugely popular photo spot, especially for weddings and at sunset.
Beimen Visitor Center — a hub for the Southwest Coast National Scenic Area, set in restored salt-industry buildings, with exhibits and information on the coast.
Wushtgang / Beimen salt fields — the historic salt pans and salt-industry remnants that define the district's landscape.
Blackfoot Disease Memorial House — a small museum commemorating the mid-20th-century blackfoot disease that affected this coast, a sobering piece of local medical history.
Coastal wetlands and bird areas — protected wetlands hosting migratory birds, best in winter.
Photograph the Crystal Church — the white waterfront chapel is the district's signature image; sunset is the favoured time.
Birdwatching — visit the coastal wetlands in winter to see migratory birds.
Cycle the salt-pan landscape — ride the flat coastal lanes among the old salt pans and lagoons.
Explore the Southwest Coast scenic route — Beimen is a stop on a longer coastal circuit taking in salt fields, fishing harbours and wetlands.

Ask on WhatsAppWhere to eat?
Beimen's food is tied to its coastal location.
- Oysters and coastal seafood (budget to mid-range) — grilled oysters, fresh fish, clams and milkfish from the local farms, served at seafood stalls and restaurants.
- Salt-themed snacks and ice cream (budget) — quirky salt-flavoured treats at the heritage sites.
- Local Taiwanese eateries (budget) — small restaurants serving everyday southern Taiwanese dishes.
- For a wider choice of restaurants, central Tainan is around an hour away.
Where to drink?
Tap water is treated but is generally boiled or filtered before drinking; bottled water is widely sold and advisable in this rural coastal area — note the district's historical association with contaminated well water, though modern supplies are safe. Stalls at the recreation area and visitor centre sell soft drinks, tea and fruit drinks. Beimen has essentially no nightlife; it is a daytime destination.
