Jarabulus

Jarabulus is a city in the Ḩalab (Aleppo) Governorate of northern Syria, located on the west bank of the Euphrates River at the border with Turkey. It is the site of the ancient city of Carchemish, a major Hittite and Neo-Hittite capital that was excavated by a team including T. E. Lawrence ("Lawrence of Arabia"). The city sits opposite the Turkish city of Karkamış. Jarabulus has been a centre of cross-border trade and was heavily affected by the Syrian conflict.

The climate is semi-arid: hot, dry summers and cool, rainy winters. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit.

Aleppo International Airport (ALP) is about 110 km southwest. A taxi costs SYP 25,000–35,000 and takes about 1 hour 30 minutes.

Jarabulus is on the road from Aleppo (110 km, 1 hr 30 min) and from Manbij (50 km south, 50 min). Shared microbuses from Aleppo serve Jarabulus (fare about SYP 6,000–10,000).

The city is moderately sized and walkable. The Euphrates riverbank and the ancient site of Carchemish are within walking distance of the centre.

• Carchemish (Karkamış): One of the most important archaeological sites in the region. The ancient Hittite capital features massive stone reliefs, city walls, gateways, and temples. Access may be restricted; check locally.

• Euphrates River: The riverfront is the heart of the city, with traditional boats and fishing activity.

• Jarabulus Market: A lively border market with Turkish and Syrian goods.

• Turkish border: The Euphrates-spanning border crossing is an impressive landmark.

• Carchemish exploration: If accessible, the stone reliefs and monumental architecture are extraordinary.

• Euphrates boat ride: Traditional wooden boats offer short trips on the river.

• Border market shopping: Turkish goods are plentiful and cheap.

• Euphrates fish restaurants: Fresh river fish (masgouf-style) grilled over open fires. A meal costs SYP 6,000–12,000.
• Turkish-style grills: Kebabs and lahmacun, reflecting the cross-border culinary influence.

Tea (Turkish and Arabic styles) is widely available. Bottled water is recommended.

• Budget: Basic hotels from SYP 12,000–20,000.
• Mid-range / Upscale: The nearest comfortable hotels are in Aleppo (110 km southwest).

Turkish textiles, household goods, and food products are the main market items. Local Euphrates fish is available fresh. The border market is the main shopping attraction.
