Goetheanum
Aargau, Switzerland
Why visit Goetheanum?
The Goetheanum is the world centre of the Anthroposophical movement, located in Dornach, just south of Basel in the canton of Solothurn (on the border with Aargau). It is a striking expressionist building made of reinforced concrete, designed by Rudolf Steiner, the founder of anthroposophy. The structure serves as a headquarters for the Anthroposophical Society and hosts conferences, performances, and educational events.
The current Goetheanum (the second building) was completed in 1928 after the first wooden structure was destroyed by fire. Its organic, sculptural architecture makes it one of the most remarkable buildings in Switzerland. The surrounding park and campus include additional anthroposophical institutions, gardens, and a biodynamic farm.
