Why visit Grisslehamn?

Grisslehamn is a coastal port village on the northern tip of Väddö island in the Roslagen archipelago, roughly 115 km north of Stockholm. Originating as a fishing settlement, the village gained regional importance in the 17th and 18th centuries when Swedish authorities designated it the western departure station for royal mail deliveries across the Sea of Åland to Finland. That cross-sea maritime link remains active through the daily passenger and car ferry service to Eckerö on Åland.

The village is closely associated with Swedish artist, author, and satirist Albert Engström (1869–1940), who lived and worked here for decades. His former cliffside studio still stands on the granite rocks overlooking the open Baltic Sea. Today, Grisslehamn operates as a dual-purpose destination: an international passenger terminal for ferry travelers crossing to Finland, and a tranquil seaside stop defined by timber fishing cabins, granite coastal cliffs, pine woods, and fish smokehouses.

Grisslehamn has a maritime hemiboreal climate tempered by the Baltic Sea. Winters (December to March) are cold, with average temperatures between -4°C and 1°C and short daylight hours. Summers (June to August) bring daytime temperatures between 18°C and 23°C alongside long daylight periods reaching nearly 19 hours around the summer solstice. Precipitation is spread moderately throughout the year, with late spring (April to May) generally being the driest period.
