Why visit Osteraker?

Österåker is a coastal municipality in Stockholm County, situated approximately 30 kilometres northeast of Stockholm along Trälhavet bay and extending into the Stockholm archipelago. The municipality's administrative and commercial centre is Åkersberga. The territory covers both mainland pine forests and approximately 800 islands and islets, the largest and most populous being Ljusterö.

The area developed historically around agriculture, coastal seafaring, and noble manor estates such as Rydboholm Castle. In the 1820s, the construction of Åkers Canal connected the inland lakes of Uppland to the Baltic Sea, establishing a commercial freight waterway. Today, the municipality functions as an archipelago gateway for recreational boaters, hikers on the regional Roslagsleden trail, and island travellers heading into Roslagen.

The local climate is humid continental with marine regulation from the Baltic Sea. Summers (June to August) bring long daylight hours of up to 18 hours per day, with daily highs averaging 20°C to 24°C (68°F–75°F). Winters (December to March) are cold and overcast, with average temperatures between -4°C and 2°C (25°F–36°F), freezing coastal inlets and bringing periodic snowfall alongside short 6-hour daylight intervals.
