Houttuin
Wanica, Suriname
Why visit Houttuin?
Houttuin is a ressort (administrative resort) in the Wanica District of Suriname, on the western edge of the greater Paramaribo conurbation. It takes its name from the Houttuyn sugar plantation, founded in 1737, and for most of its history it was farmland. The largest ethnic group is the Indo-Surinamese (Hindustani) community, and the area has long been planned to remain an agricultural centre even as Paramaribo's suburbs creep outward. Its 2012 census population was around 15,656.
In the early 21st century Houttuin has grown steadily and is becoming increasingly suburban, with housing developments such as Tout Lui Faut and a growing service economy. It is also an industrial node for Suriname: the state oil company Staatsolie operates a refinery and a thermal power plant in the area, reflecting Houttuin's role on the corridor between Paramaribo and the southern interior. For travellers, the draw is less sightseeing than the riverside leisure scene that has developed along the Suriname River, anchored by a wellness resort.
The climate is hot and humid year-round, typical of equatorial Suriname, with daytime highs around 30-33°C. The driest and most comfortable months are roughly August to November and a shorter dry spell in February-March; the long rains (late April to August) and short rains (December-January) bring heavy downpours.

By Plane
The nearest international airport is Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport (PBM) at Zanderij in the neighbouring Para District, about 40-45 km south. Zorg en Hoop Airport (ORG) in Paramaribo serves domestic flights and is closer. From either, the practical link to Houttuin is by road; agree taxi fares before setting off, as there is no dedicated airport shuttle to the resort.
By Car / Road
Houttuin sits just southwest of Paramaribo and is reached in roughly 20-30 minutes by car via the Indira Gandhiweg and connecting roads through Wanica. Frequent minibuses and shared taxis ("wagi") run from central Paramaribo along the Indira Gandhiweg toward Lelydorp and will drop you near Houttuin; fares are low in Surinamese dollars (SRD). Suriname drives on the left, and the main corridor can be congested during commuter hours.
Houttuin is spread out along plantation roads and the riverside, so a car is the most convenient way to get around; the riverside resort grounds themselves are walkable once you arrive. Shared minibuses and taxis serve the Indira Gandhiweg corridor and connect to Lelydorp and Paramaribo. Formal ride-hailing is limited, so visitors generally drive, take minibuses, or come as part of an arranged trip.
What are the things to do?
Suriname River frontage — broad, tranquil river scenery is the main natural attraction; the resort area offers the easiest access for swimming and boating.
Houttuyn Wellness River Resort grounds — landscaped riverside grounds with a pool and spa, pleasant even for a day visit (see the Sleep section).
Spa and wellness — the Houttuyn Wellness River Resort offers massage and spa treatments and a riverside pool, the area's signature draw.
River swimming and boating — enjoy the Suriname River from the resort's waterfront.
Glamping — overnight in glamping tents on the riverbank for a relaxed escape from the city.
Day trips — use Houttuin as a base for visiting Lelydorp's markets or crossing toward the Commewijne plantations.

Ask on WhatsAppWhere to eat?
Houttuin's strongly Indo-Surinamese character shows in the food: look for roti (flatbread with curried potato, chicken or goat and long beans), bara and phulauri (fried savoury snacks), and curries, with vegetarian versions widely available. The Houttuyn Wellness River Resort runs a riverside restaurant serving Surinamese and international dishes in a scenic setting. For a wider spread of warungs, snackbars and roti shops, nearby Lelydorp and Paramaribo are a short drive away. Many roadside snesi winkri (Chinese-Surinamese shops) sell cheap cooked meals as well.
Where to drink?
Cold Parbo, the national lager, is the standard accompaniment to a meal, served at the resort and local snackbars. Non-alcoholic options reflect the Hindustani influence — sweet, milky chai and fresh fruit juices — alongside the ubiquitous soft drinks. Tap water in the coastal districts is generally treated, but bottled water is widely used by visitors; check locally if uncertain.
