Peliyagoda is a suburb in the Colombo District, located about 8 km north of Colombo Fort on the A3 highway (Negombo Road). It lies on the northern bank of the Kelani River, just across from Colombo proper. Peliyagoda is a busy commercial and industrial area, known for its timber yards, hardware shops, and as a major transport junction.
The Peliyagoda fish market is one of Colombo's largest wholesale fish markets, supplying much of the city's seafood. The suburb is primarily industrial and working-class, with a bustling street life and convenient access to both Colombo and the airport road. Climate is tropical monsoon, best visited December–March.

By Plane
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB IATA) is 25 km north. Taxi takes 30–40 minutes via expressway (Rs 2,500–4,000). Bus 240 passes through Peliyagoda en route to Colombo.
By Train
The nearest railway station is Colombo Fort (8 km) or Hunupitiya. Buses and tuk-tuks connect to these stations.
By Car / Road
Peliyagoda is on the A3 highway, 8 km north of Colombo Fort. Buses from Colombo Pettah take 20–30 minutes. The Kelani River bridge at Peliyagoda is a major crossing point for traffic heading north.
Tuk-tuks are the main local transport. Buses along the A3 connect Peliyagoda to Colombo, Wattala, and Negombo. The area is very congested during peak hours.
What are the things to do?
Peliyagoda Fish Market — A large wholesale fish market, lively in the early morning hours. Kelani River — The river banks offer views of river life and boat traffic. The suburb has several small Hindu kovils and Buddhist temples.
Visit the fish market at dawn for a cultural experience. Explore the Kelani River waterfront. Peliyagoda is primarily a working suburb; most tourist activities are in central Colombo.
