Why visit Colombo?

Colombo (Sinhala: කොළඹ, Tamil: கொழும்பு) is the largest city and commercial capital of Sri Lanka, though the administrative capital has moved to nearby Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte. As a busy Indian Ocean port city, Colombo has been a trading hub for over 2,000 years, visited by merchants from China, Rome, and the Arab world. Today it is a vibrant, congested, and cosmopolitan metropolis where colonial-era buildings stand alongside modern skyscrapers.

The city was shaped by successive colonial powers — Portuguese, Dutch, and British — each leaving their mark on the architecture and layout. The Fort district, once a Portuguese and later Dutch fortification, is now the financial heart. Colombo has a tropical monsoon climate with temperatures around 25–30°C year-round. The best time to visit is December to March during the north-east monsoon, when rainfall is lowest. July and August also offer a shorter dry period.

Colombo is divided into 15 administrative districts (from Colombo 1–15), each with its own character. The Fort area (Colombo 1) is the commercial and government centre, Pettah (Colombo 11) is a bustling bazaar district, Slave Island (Colombo 2) is home to Beira Lake and temples, and Cinnamon Gardens (Colombo 7) is an upscale residential area with museums and parks.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB IATA) at Katunayake, 35 km north of Colombo, is Sri Lanka's primary international gateway. Taxis into Colombo Fort take about 45 minutes via the E03 expressway and cost around Rs 7,500 (2024). Public bus 187 runs between the airport and Colombo Fort for Rs 200–320. The airport shuttle bus connects to the Katunayake bus stand and railway station. Ratmalana Airport (RML IATA), 15 km south of Colombo, handles domestic flights from Hambantota, Jaffna, and Trincomalee.

By Train

Colombo Fort Railway Station is the main hub for Sri Lanka Railways, with connections to all major cities including Kandy (2–3 hours), Galle (1–2 hours), Jaffna (6–7 hours), and Badulla (8–10 hours via the scenic hill country line). Advance booking is recommended for popular routes, especially first-class observation carriages on the Colombo–Badulla line. Colombo has several suburban stations including Maradana, Bambalapitiya, and Wellawatte.

By Car / Road

Colombo is connected by the E01–E04 expressway network to Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Kandy, and Kurunegala. Major highways radiate from the Pettah bus terminal. The Central Bus Station in Pettah is the largest bus hub, with government and private buses to every corner of the island. An A/C bus from Kandy takes about 3–4 hours and costs around Rs 500–800.

Colombo's public transport includes buses, trains, tuk-tuks (auto-rickshaws), and ride-hailing apps like PickMe and Uber. Buses and trains are cheap but crowded during peak hours. Tuk-tuks are ubiquitous — negotiate the fare before boarding or use PickMe for transparent pricing. Short trips within the city cost Rs 200–500. The Fort–Pettah area is walkable, but the city sprawls widely. The suburban rail network is useful for travelling the coastal corridor from Mount Lavinia to Negombo.

What are the things to do?

Colombo's top attractions span several neighbourhoods:

Temples and Religious Sites: Gangaramaya Temple (Colombo 2) — a striking Buddhist temple with a museum, open 5:30AM–10PM, free entry. Seema Malaka meditation centre on Beira Lake, connected to Gangaramaya. Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque (Pettah) — a striking red-and-white striped mosque built in 1909. St. Lucia's Cathedral (Kotahena) — the largest Catholic cathedral in Sri Lanka.

Museums and Culture: National Museum of Colombo (Cinnamon Gardens) — Sri Lanka's largest museum showcasing the island's history, open 9AM–5PM, Rs 1,200 for foreign adults. Independence Square (Colombo 7) — a memorial hall and park commemorating independence in 1948. Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre — a modern performing arts venue shaped like a lotus pond.

Parks and Waterfront: Viharamahadevi Park (Colombo 7) — the city's largest park, with a children's playground and giant Buddha statue. Galle Face Green — a seaside promenade popular for evening strolls, street food, and kite flying. Beira Lake — a scenic lake in the heart of the city with boat rides.

Colonial Architecture: Old Parliament Building (Fort) — a grand neo-Baroque building from 1930. Dutch Hospital (Fort) — a restored 17th-century Dutch colonial building now housing shops and restaurants. Lighthouse Clock Tower (Fort) — a 19th-century landmark.

Take a walking tour of the Fort district to see colonial architecture. Visit Pettah Market for an immersive local bazaar experience — a maze of streets selling everything from textiles to electronics. Enjoy sunset at Galle Face Green with local snacks like isso wade (prawn fritters). Take a boat ride on Beira Lake. Explore the Colombo Street Food scene on a guided food tour. Shop at Crescat Boulevard or Liberty Plaza for modern retail. Catch a performance at Nelum Pokuna Theatre. Spend a day at Dehiwala Zoo, one of Asia's oldest zoos.
