Why visit Karainagar?
Karainagar (Tamil: காரைநகர்) is an island town in the Jaffna District of Northern Province, located about 20 km west of Jaffna city. It is one of the larger islands in the Jaffna archipelago, connected to the mainland by a causeway. Karainagar is known for its beautiful beaches, particularly Casuarina Beach, and its historical sites including the Karainagar Fort.
The island has a largely Tamil population engaged in fishing, coconut cultivation, and agriculture. The area was affected by the civil war but has since seen development. Casuarina Beach is a popular weekend getaway for locals. The climate is hot and dry, best visited December–March.
