Kalkudah

Kalkudah (Tamil: கல்குடா) is a coastal resort area in the Batticaloa District of Eastern Province, located adjacent to and just north of Passikudah. It shares the same exceptionally calm, shallow bay that makes this area unique — the water remains shallow for hundreds of metres offshore. Kalkudah is marginally less developed than Passikudah, with a quieter atmosphere.

The beach is lined with palm trees and the water is crystal clear and turquoise. Kalkudah is being developed as part of the same tourist zone as Passikudah. Like Passikudah, it was a popular destination before the civil war. Climate is hot and dry, best visited December–April.

Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB IATA) is 300 km west. Batticaloa Airport (BTC IATA) is 40 km south.

By Train

The nearest railway station is Valaichchenai (5 km).

By Car / Road

Kalkudah is 3 km north of Passikudah and 40 km north of Batticaloa. Buses from Batticaloa take 45 minutes.

Tuk-tuks. The beach area is walkable.

Resorts and guesthouses similar to Passikudah, generally at slightly lower prices.

Small beachside stalls sell souvenirs and refreshments. The nearest substantial shopping is in Valaichchenai (5 km) or Batticaloa (40 km).
