Galicia [Galicia] is Spain's green, Atlantic corner — a land of granite villages, Celtic-flavoured music, dramatic coastlines, and a cuisine built around seafood so fresh it was swimming hours ago. Occupying the northwestern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, this autonomous community possesses a cultural identity distinct from the rest of Spain: its own language (Galician, closely related to Portuguese), a tradition of emigration, and a way of life shaped by the Atlantic climate and the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route.
The landscape is defined by the rías — drowned river valleys that create sheltered inlets of startling beauty. The Costa da Morte to the north is wild and rocky; the Rías Baixas to the south are gentler, lined with vineyards and beaches. Inland, the terrain rises into rolling green hills, ancient chestnut forests, and mountainous borders. Santiago de Compostela, the capital, is one of Christendom's great pilgrimage cities, but the region's charm extends far beyond — to fishing villages like Combarro, pristine beaches of the Cíes Islands, and Romanesque churches in the interior.
When is the best time to visit?
June to September offers the best weather: warm (18–25°C), relatively dry, and ideal for coastal walks and beach days. The Festa do Marisco (October) in O Grove celebrates the shellfish season. July and August are peak season. Spring (April–May) is excellent for the Camino de Santiago — wildflowers bloom and crowds are thinner. Autumn brings mushroom season and cooler, misty days that suit the region's melancholic beauty. Winter (November–February) is quiet and rainy but atmospheric, especially in Santiago's old town.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Santiago de Compostela's airport (SCQ) connects to major European cities, while A Coruña and Vigo also have airports. The high-speed AVE line links Santiago to Madrid in about 3 hours. Renfe Media Distancia trains connect the main cities: A Coruña, Vigo, Pontevedra, Lugo, Ourense, and Ferrol. Buses (ALSA, Monbus) reach smaller towns. Driving is the most flexible option — the AP-9 motorway runs from Ferrol to Vigo via Santiago and Pontevedra, while well-maintained secondary roads branch to the coast and interior. The Camino de Santiago walking routes offer a unique way to explore the region on foot.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Galicia is Spain's seafood powerhouse. The region's signature dishes include pulpo á feira (octopus boiled and served with paprika, olive oil, and coarse salt on wooden plates), empanada gallega (a savoury pie filled with tuna, sardines, or meat), and lacón con grelos (pork shoulder with turnip tops). The star ingredient is seafood: percebes (goose barnacles), navajas (razor clams), almejas (clams), mejillones (mussels), and zamburiñas (small scallops). Albariño white wine from the Rías Baixas is the perfect accompaniment. The region's four Denominación de Orixe wine areas — Rías Baixas, Ribeiro, Ribeira Sacra, and Monterrei — produce distinctive whites. For dessert, try tarta de Santiago (almond cake dusted with icing sugar and the cross of Saint James) and filloas (Galician crêpes).
What is the culture like?
Galicia's culture feels more Celtic than Mediterranean — bagpipes (gaita) accompany traditional dances, and ancient Celtic forts (castros) dot the landscape. The Festival de Ortigueira (July) is the biggest Celtic music gathering in Spain. The Semana Santa processions in Viveiro, Ferrol, and Santiago de Compostela are among the most spectacular in Spain. The Feast of Santiago (25 July) honours the city's patron saint with fireworks, concerts, and religious ceremonies. Carnival (Entroido) celebrations in Xinzo de Limia, Laza, and Verín feature colourful costumes and satirical performances. The Rapa das Bestas in Sabucedo (July) is a traditional horse taming festival. The Día das Letras Galegas (17 May) celebrates Galician literature.
