Merida
Extremadura, Spain
Why visit Merida?
Mérida is the capital of Extremadura and a city of immense Roman heritage, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in 25 BC as Emerita Augusta by Emperor Augustus, it became the capital of the Roman province of Lusitania and one of the most important cities in the Iberian Peninsula. Today it preserves more Roman monuments than any other Spanish city, including a spectacular theatre, amphitheatre, and the longest surviving Roman bridge.
