Monfrague National Park
Extremadura, Spain
Why visit Monfrague National Park?
Monfragüe National Park is one of Spain's most important birdwatching destinations and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Centred on the Tagus and Tiétar river gorges, the park protects the largest expanse of Mediterranean forest and scrubland on the Iberian Peninsula. It is home to the densest population of Spanish imperial eagle in the world, as well as black storks, griffon vultures, Egyptian vultures, and black vultures.

What are the things to do?
Salto del Gitano (Gypsy's Leap) — the park's most famous viewpoint, a massive granite outcrop overlooking the Tagus River, always busy with circling vultures.
Castillo de Monfragüe — a 12th-century castle on a hilltop within the park, offering panoramic views of the park and river.
Puente del Cardenal — a 15th-century bridge over the Tagus, a popular starting point for walking trails.
Mirador de la Torre — a viewing platform accessible by car, excellent for eagle and vulture watching.
Birdwatching from the Salto del Gitano — bring binoculars; griffon vultures, black storks, and occasionally Spanish imperial eagles are visible.
Hike the Sendero de los Pasariegos — a 6 km trail from the castle along the river cliffs.
Take a guided birdwatching tour — local guides know the best spots for eagles, vultures, and the rare black stork.
Sunset photography from the castle — the evening light over the Tagus valley is spectacular.
