Picos de Europa National Park

Cantabria, Spain

Why visit Picos de Europa National Park?

The Picos de Europa National Park is one of Spain's most spectacular natural areas and its second-most-visited national park. Despite its name ('Peaks of Europe'), the park is emphatically Spanish, straddling the boundaries of Cantabria, Asturias, and León. Its jagged limestone peaks — the tallest reaching 2,650 m at Torre de Cerredo — rise dramatically from the Atlantic coast, creating the most abrupt mountain-to-sea gradient in the country. The park is divided into three massifs: the Western (or Cornión), the Central (or Urrieles, containing the highest peaks), and the Eastern (or Ándara).

The landscape is a paradise for walkers and climbers, with hundreds of kilometres of marked trails, deep limestone gorges, glacial lakes, and dramatic river canyons such as the Cares Gorge. Wildlife includes the Cantabrian brown bear, Iberian wolf, chamois (rebeco), and golden eagle. The park is also rich in traditional mountain culture, with cheese-making villages (especially Cabrales and Valdeón), Romanesque churches, and the famous Lakes of Covadonga in the Asturian sector.

How do you get there?

By Car

From Santander, take the A-8 west then the N-621 south through Unquera and Panes to Potes (90 km, 1.5 hours). The park has several access points: Fuente Dé (cable car), Potes (southern gateway), and Covadonga (Asturian side).

By Bus

ALSA runs buses from Santander to Potes (2 hours, 2 daily). Local buses connect Potes to Fuente Dé and other park access points in summer.

By Train

The nearest railway stations are Unquera and Panes on the Santander–Oviedo line. From there, bus or taxi to the park.

Driving is the most practical way to reach different parts of the park. The Fuente Dé cable car and the Lagos de Covadonga are the two main hubs. In summer, access to Covadonga by private car is restricted; take the shuttle bus from Cangas de Onís.
