Why visit San Vicente de la Barquera?
San Vicente de la Barquera is a picturesque fishing town and resort 55 km west of Santander, at the point where the rivers Escudo and Gandarilla flow into a sheltered estuary. Its medieval core clusters around a rocky outcrop crowned by a 13th-century church and castle, connected by a long bridge to the eastern bank where the modern town and the ferry port for Oyambre beach have developed. The old town is a maze of narrow cobbled streets, lined with traditional stone houses with wooden balconies and flower-filled window boxes. The town's main attraction is its dramatic setting: a broad sandy beach, a protected natural park (Oyambre) to the south, and the backdrop of the Picos de Europa visible on clear days.
