Balcad

Balcad (Balad) is the seat of Balcad District in the Shabeellaha Dhexe (Middle Shabelle) region of Somalia, on the Shabelle River about 36 km northeast of Mogadishu. The wider district covers roughly 4,400 km², stretches to a long Indian Ocean coastline, and is home to an estimated 643,000 people across the town and some 82 surrounding villages. The district's economy rests on farming, livestock, and marine resources; in the 1970s the town was a center of cotton growing and cotton-textile production, and irrigated farmland along the Shabelle still supports the local economy today. Balcad was under al-Shabaab control until it was retaken in 2012, and the district has seen further military operations and displacement in the years since — travelers should check current conditions before planning a visit.

Balcad is accessible from Jowhar and Mogadishu by unpaved road. Four-wheel-drive is recommended.
