Shabeellaha Dhexe

Shabeellaha Dhexe (Middle Shabelle) is a region in southern Somalia, named after the Shabelle River that flows through its territory. The region lies along the middle course of the Shabelle River, which provides vital irrigation for agriculture. The landscape is a mix of riverine farmland, savannah, and semi-arid plains. The regional capital, Jowhar, is an important agricultural centre known as the "breadbasket" of the region.

The dry months from December to March offer the easiest travel conditions. The Gu rains (April to June) bring the river to its fullest. February and March are the hottest months.

Jowhar is connected by road to Mogadishu (approximately 90 km south) and Balcad. Roads are mostly unpaved. Four-wheel-drive is recommended. Security escorts are advised.
