Razkrižje is a small municipality in northeastern Slovenia, situated along the Mura River near the border with Croatia. Covering just 9.8 km², it is one of Slovenia's smallest municipalities, characterised by low-lying Pannonian plains, agricultural fields, and the gentle flow of the Mura River that defines its eastern boundary. The landscape is predominantly rural, with scattered hamlets, farmlands, and patches of riparian forest.
The municipality's name derives from the Slovene word "razkrižje," meaning crossroads, reflecting its historical position at the intersection of regional trade routes. The administrative centre is the village of Razkrižje, a quiet settlement with traditional Prekmurje-style architecture. The area offers a glimpse into the unhurried rural life of the Prekmurje region, with a landscape dotted with cornfields, vineyards, and apple orchards.
For travellers seeking authentic rural Slovenia away from tourist crowds, Razkrižje provides a peaceful retreat. The Mura River offers opportunities for fishing and riverside walks, while the surrounding countryside is ideal for cycling through quiet country lanes. The municipality's proximity to the Croatian border also makes it a convenient stop for those exploring the broader Mura River region.
When is the best time to visit?
The best time to visit Razkrižje is from April to October, with late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October) offering the most pleasant conditions. Summers are warm, with temperatures averaging 25–28°C, ideal for cycling and outdoor activities. Autumn brings the grape harvest and colourful foliage along the Mura River. Winters are cold and quiet, with temperatures often dropping below freezing, though the region sees less precipitation than Slovenia's alpine areas. Local festivities centre around the annual kermesse (fair) in late summer, a traditional celebration with music, food, and community gatherings.

Razkrižje's cuisine reflects the Prekmurje culinary tradition, known for hearty, filling dishes. Specialties include prekmurska gibanica (a layered pastry with poppy seeds, walnuts, apples, raisins, and cottage cheese), bograč (a rich meat and vegetable stew cooked in a cauldron), and bujta repa (fermented turnip stew with pork). Local wine production includes white varieties from nearby vineyards. Visitors can sample these dishes at local gostilnas (traditional inns) in the surrounding area. Dietary options are limited; the cuisine is meat-centric with few dedicated vegetarian establishments.
What is the culture like?
Razkrižje's cultural life centres on community traditions typical of the Prekmurje region. The annual parish fair (kermesse) in late summer is the main local event, featuring folk music, traditional dances, and local food stalls. The municipality preserves elements of Prekmurje folk culture, including traditional embroidery and pottery. Nearby Ljutomer hosts the Prleški festival celebrating local folklore and wine. The region's Hungarian minority heritage also contributes to the cultural mosaic, visible in bilingual signage and shared culinary traditions.
