Otocec
Novo Mesto, Slovenia
Why visit Otocec?
Otočec is a small village in the Dolenjska (Lower Carniola) region of southeastern Slovenia, famous for being home to Slovenia's only island castle — Otočec Castle, situated on a small islet in the middle of the Krka River. The name Otočec itself is a diminutive form of the Slovenian word otok (island), literally meaning "small island." The village and its castle form one of the most romantic and photogenic settings in Slovenia.
The castle, known as Grad Otočec in Slovenian, dates back to the 13th century when it was built by the Habsburgs as a water fortress. It has been rebuilt several times over the centuries — damaged during the Ottoman incursions in the 15th century, renovated in the Renaissance style in the 16th, and given a Baroque makeover in the 17th. After the Second World War, it was nationalised and eventually converted into a luxury hotel and restaurant. Today, it is operated by the Relais & Châteaux group and is one of Slovenia's most prestigious accommodation and dining addresses.
The surrounding landscape is classic Dolenjska — gentle, vineyard-covered hills, patches of forest, and the meandering Krka River forming oxbow loops. The area is prime cviček wine country, and the hillsides are dotted with wine cellars and traditional farmhouses. For visitors, Otočec offers a unique combination of fairy-tale architecture, riverside nature, and gourmet dining.

What are the things to do?
Otočec Castle — the island castle is the absolute highlight. While the interior operates as a hotel, non-guests can visit the restaurant, café, and gardens, and walk around the exterior. The castle's fairy-tale silhouette reflected in the Krka River is one of the most photographed scenes in Slovenia.
Krka River walk — a beautiful walking path follows the Krka River through Otočec, passing through riverside forest and over footbridges. Particularly lovely in the early morning or late afternoon light.
The footbridge and island — the single-arch stone footbridge connecting the riverbank to the castle island is itself a charming structure, offering prime photo angles of the castle.
Otočec Park — the English-style park surrounding the hotel entrance features mature trees, manicured lawns, and a small pond.
Photograph the castle — the best photo opportunities are from the footbridge approach, from the riverbank downstream, and from the walking path on the opposite side of the Krka.
Dine or have afternoon tea at the castle — even non-guests can enjoy the castle's restaurant or café. Afternoon tea in the castle lounge is a memorable experience (reservations recommended).
Canoe or kayak on the Krka — paddle along the Krka River loop that surrounds the castle island, offering unique views of the castle from water level. Rentals available in Novo Mesto.
Wine tasting in the surrounding hills — several wine cellars in the vineyards above Otočec offer tastings of cviček and other local wines. Ask at the castle for recommendations.
Cycle through the Dolenjska countryside — the quiet lanes around Otočec are perfect for cycling, with rolling terrain and vineyard views.
