Why visit?

Novo Mesto is the seventh-largest city in Slovenia and the administrative center of the Dolenjska (Lower Carniola) region in the southeastern part of the country. Situated along a sharp loop of the Krka River, the urban municipality covers 298.5 square kilometers and has a population of approximately 38,000 residents. Archduke Rudolf IV of Austria founded the settlement in 1365 under the name Rudolfswert, positioning it as a regional trade hub along the river valley.

The area holds major archaeological significance, earning the nickname "City of Situlae" due to the extensive Iron Age Hallstatt artifacts excavated from nearby sites such as Kandija and Kapiteljska njiva. Archaeologists unearthed bronze situlae (decorated buckets) dating from the 6th to 4th centuries BCE, which now form a central exhibit in the local museum. Today, Novo Mesto serves as an industrial driver for Slovenia, hosting the headquarters of Krka Pharmaceuticals and the Revoz automotive plant.

Novo Mesto experiences a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers (June through August) bring warm conditions, with daily high temperatures averaging between 25 °C and 28 °C (77 °F to 82 °F). Winters (December through February) are cold, with daytime averages of 3 °C to 6 °C (37 °F to 43 °F) and freezing overnight temperatures. Annual precipitation totals approximately 1,100 mm, with heavy rainfall occurring during May, June, and October.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring (April through June) provides daytime temperatures between 15 °C and 24 °C (59 °F to 75 °F), making it suitable for exploring the historic center, paddling on the Krka River, and walking through the wine hills of Trška Gora. Periodic rainfall requires carrying a waterproof jacket.

Summer (July and August) is the warmest season, with daytime highs regularly reaching 26 °C to 30 °C (79 °F to 86 °F). River activity increases during these months, with stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking popular along the Krka loop. Outdoor music events and theater performances take place during the annual Novo Mesto Summer Nights festival.

Autumn (September and October) coincides with the grape harvest in surrounding vineyards. Daily highs average 14 °C to 20 °C (57 °F to 68 °F) in September before dropping to 9 °C to 15 °C (48 °F to 59 °F) in October. Wine cellars open for seasonal tastings of Cviček. Winter (November through March) brings quiet conditions and temperatures averaging 2 °C to 7 °C (36 °F to 45 °F). December features holiday market stalls on Glavni trg.
