Kozina

Hrpelje-Kozina, Slovenia

Why visit Kozina?

Kozina is the larger of the two main settlements in the Hrpelje-Kozina municipality and serves as the municipal administrative centre. Situated on the karst plateau of Slovenian Istria at the junction of major road and rail routes between Ljubljana, Koper, and the Croatian border, Kozina functions primarily as a transport and service hub. Its position on the historic Vienna–Trieste railway line gives it a longer industrial and commercial history than neighbouring Hrpelje. For travellers, Kozina is a practical stopover with a railway station, shops, and basic services, and a convenient base for exploring the karst caves, the Brkini hills, and the Slovenian coast.

What are the things to do?

  • Kozina Church of St. Lawrence — The parish church, built in the 17th century and remodelled in the 19th, stands at the centre of the town. Its simple Baroque facade and bell tower are characteristic of the karst region's ecclesiastical architecture.

  • Visit the Škocjan Caves — The UNESCO-listed Škocjan Caves are just 15 km northeast of Kozina, with guided tours through the massive underground canyon — one of Slovenia's most spectacular natural attractions.

  • Day Trip to the Coast — Koper's historic centre and waterfront are a 20-minute drive from Kozina, making a coastal excursion easily combined with karst exploration.
