Why visit Stara Fuzina?

Stara Fuzina (literally "Old Forge") is the oldest and most historically significant village in the Bohinj Valley, situated halfway between Lake Bohinj and Bohinjska Bistrica. With a population of around 150, this compact cluster of traditional Alpine farmhouses, barns, and hayracks dates back to the 14th century, when the Bohinj Valley was first settled by iron-smelters and charcoal burners. The village takes its name from the iron forges (fužine) that operated here, fed by ore from the surrounding mountains and charcoal from the valley's vast forests.

Today, Stara Fuzina is prized for its exceptionally well-preserved traditional Alpine architecture. Many of its houses retain their original features: steep shingle roofs, wooden balconies hung with drying flowers, and thick stone walls. The village is a designated cultural heritage settlement, and its centrepiece is the Alpine Dairy Museum (Muzej planšarstva), housed in a restored 19th-century dairy building. This museum documents the centuries-old tradition of summer alpine dairy farming (planšarstvo), where shepherds and cheesemakers drive cattle to high pastures in the Julian Alps and produce the region's famous Bohinj cheese.

Stara Fuzina has a quiet, residential character. It has no hotels on the scale of Ribčev Laz, no bus terminus, and no major car park. Its handful of guesthouses and tourist farms offer an authentic, low-key base for exploring the valley, popular with hikers and families seeking a village atmosphere rather than a resort experience.
