Srednja vas v Bohinju
Bohinj, Slovenia
Why visit Srednja vas v Bohinju?
Srednja vas v Bohinju (literally "Middle Village in Bohinj") is a traditional farming settlement in the eastern part of the Bohinj Valley, just east of Bohinjska Bistrica. With around 140 residents, it is one of the valley's smaller villages, strung out along the valley road at the foot of the Pokljuka Plateau. Unlike the lakeside settlements, Srednja vas has no tourist infrastructure to speak of — its appeal lies entirely in its authentic Alpine farming character, preserved hayracks, and the surrounding agricultural landscape of pastures and hay meadows.
The village is notable for its concentration of traditional kozolci (Slovenian hayracks) — the distinctive wooden drying racks that are a symbol of Slovenian rural architecture. The fields around Srednja vas contain some of the best-preserved examples in the Bohinj region, and the annual hay harvest is still carried out using traditional methods on many of the smaller farms. The village is a peaceful, off-the-radar stop for those interested in rural Alpine culture and the agricultural traditions that still define the Bohinj Valley economy.
Srednja vas has no restaurant, no café, no shop, and no museum. Its handful of working farms produce milk, cheese, and timber. Most houses date from the 19th and early 20th centuries, built in the traditional Bohinj style: stone ground floors, wooden upper storeys, and steep shingle roofs held down by stones against the Alpine wind.

What are the things to do?
Traditional hayracks (kozolci) — The single-row and double-row hayracks in the fields around Srednja vas are among the best preserved in Upper Carniola. The best examples are along the path south of the main road, behind the village chapel.
Chapel of St. Joseph — A small 19th-century neo-Gothic chapel at the village crossroads, with a painted wooden ceiling and simple furnishings. Open for Sunday mass only.
Bohinj hay meadows — The surrounding fields are part of the Bohinj traditional hay-meadow system, now protected as a Natura 2000 site for their wildflower diversity (including the endemic Bohinj bellflower). Best viewed in June–July.
Hayrack photography walk — The early-morning and late-afternoon light on the wooden hayracks against the backdrop of the Julian Alps offers exceptional photographic opportunities. A 3 km circuit behind the village covers the best examples.
Cycle to Bohinj Lake — A flat, easy 5 km cycle west along the valley road takes you to Ribčev Laz and Lake Bohinj. Bikes can be hired in Bohinjska Bistrica (2 km west).
Pokljuka Plateau hike — From the upper edge of the village, a forest road climbs 3 km to the Pokljuka Plateau, a high karst plateau with hiking trails, cross-country ski tracks, and scattered alpine dairy huts.
