Why visit Kopcany?

Kopčany is a village of roughly 2,600 residents in the Skalica District of Trnavský kraj, situated in the Záhorie lowland near the Morava River on the Slovak-Czech border. The settlement stands out internationally for its pre-Romanesque Church of St. Margaret of Antioch, which dates to the 9th or 10th century and stands as the only preserved above-ground church building from the Great Moravian Empire.

During the 18th century, the village gained further prominence when Duke Francis Stephen of Lorraine, husband of Empress Maria Theresa, established the Imperial and Royal Stud Farm here to breed Kladruber and Lipizzaner horses for the Habsburg court. Today, Kopčany functions as an agricultural and cultural center connected directly to the Czech archaeological park of Mikulčice via a dedicated cross-border pedestrian and cycling bridge.

The local climate is lowland continental, featuring warm summers with daytime temperatures between 25°C and 30°C (77°F–86°F) and cold, dry winters where temperatures frequently dip below 0°C (32°F).
