Why visit Piestany?
Piešťany is Slovakia's premier spa town, situated along the Váh River in the Trnava Region of western Slovakia, approximately 85 km northeast of Bratislava. With a population of around 27,000, the town is known across Central Europe for its geothermal mineral springs and therapeutic sulfurous mud, which surface at temperatures between 67°C and 69°C (153°F to 156°F). Medical spa visitors and travelers have come here since the early 19th century to treat rheumatic, arthritic, and musculoskeletal conditions on Spa Island (Kúpeľný ostrov), a river island managed as a specialized health resort complex.
The town's recognized symbol is the Crutch Breaker (Barlolámač), a bronze sculpture of a man snapping a crutch over his knee, representing physical recovery through balneotherapy. Beyond thermal sanatoriums, Piešťany features pedestrian promenades, Art Nouveau and Functionalist architecture, landscaped parklands, and the Sĺňava water reservoir immediately to the south.
Piešťany lies in the Danubian Lowland, flanked to the east by the forested Považský Inovec mountain range. The local climate is temperate and sunny, with summer highs averaging 26°C to 29°C (79°F to 84°F) and winter temperatures averaging between -3°C and 3°C (27°F to 37°F).
