Aleksandrovac
Rasinski okrug, Serbia
Why visit Aleksandrovac?
Aleksandrovac is a town of roughly 5,500 residents (municipal population around 22,000) in the Rasinski okrug of central Serbia. It serves as the commercial center of the Župa viticultural region, an agricultural basin bounded by the Goč, Kopaonik, and Željin mountains. Grape growing in the valley dates to Roman times and expanded during the reign of Prince Lazar in the 14th century, who granted local vineyard land to the Lavra Monastery.
The local economy centers on grape growing and winemaking, particularly the regional varieties Prokupac (red) and Tamjanika (aromatic white). Scattered across the hills surrounding the town are poljane—seasonal stone-and-timber cellar hamlets built by farming families to ferment and store wine near their crop fields.
Aleksandrovac sits in a sheltered valley with a modified continental climate. Surrounding mountain ridges block harsh northern winds, yielding warm summer averages of 26–28°C (79–82°F) and winter averages between −2°C and 4°C (28–39°F). Annual precipitation averages 700 mm, peaking in late spring.
