Why visit?

Rasinski okrug (Rasina District) is located in central Serbia, covering an area of 2,267 km². The district is named after the Rasina River and its administrative centre is Kruševac, a historic city that was the capital of medieval Prince Lazar Hrebeljanović. The Rasina region is a land of significant medieval history, wine traditions, and natural beauty, with the famous Ribarska Banja spa and the Jastrebac and Kopaonik mountain foothills.

The district's landscape transitions from the flat Morava valley in the north to the forested slopes of Jastrebac Mountain in the south. The Župa wine region around Aleksandrovac is one of Serbia's most important wine-growing areas, with vineyards covering the rolling hills. The medieval monasteries of Ljubostinja and Stalać bear witness to the region's importance during the Serbian medieval state, when Kruševac served as the capital under Prince Lazar.

When is the best time to visit?

Rasinski okrug is best visited from April to October. Spring (April–May) brings wildflowers to the Jastrebac mountain trails and pleasant temperatures for monastery visits. Summer (June–August) is warmest, with the Ribarska Banja spa offering relief from the heat. The Župa wine harvest in September and October is a particular highlight.

Winter (December–February) is cold in the mountains but mild in the valley. The annual Kruševac cultural programme includes music and theatre events. The Ribarska Banja spa operates year-round with its thermal mineral waters.

What should you eat?

The Rasina region is a major agricultural area, and its cuisine reflects this abundance. The Župa area is famous for its lamb and pork roasts, while the Jastrebac foothills produce excellent cheeses and kajmak. Kruševac's restaurants serve traditional Serbian fare with a focus on grilled meats and stews. Trout from the mountain streams of Jastrebac and Kopaonik is a local delicacy. The region's wine culture means meals are often accompanied by local vintages from the Župa valley.

What is the culture like?

The district's cultural heritage is anchored in medieval Serbian history. Kruševac was the capital of Prince Lazar's 14th-century Serbian state, and the Lazarica Church remains the city's symbolic landmark. The Ljubostinja Monastery, a 14th-century convent founded by Princess Milica after the Battle of Kosovo, features a beautiful carved wooden iconostasis. The Župa wine region near Aleksandrovac celebrates its viticultural heritage with annual wine festivals. Traditional folk music and kolo dancing are practiced at village celebrations throughout the district.
