Why visit Monte Pulito?

Monte Pulito is a prominent ridge and administrative hamlet (curazia) located in the southwestern portion of the Faetano municipality (castello) in the Republic of San Marino. While it has a quiet, rural atmosphere today with green pastures and crop fields, it holds a deeply significant place in modern European history.

Monte Pulito was the center of the fierce Battle of Monte Pulito (also known as the Battle of San Marino) in September 1944. During the Second World War, Allied forces, specifically the 4th Indian Division, advanced to dislodge German forces entrenched along the Gothic Line. The ridge saw heavy fighting, and it was here that Gurkha soldier Sher Bahadur Thapa of the 9th Gurkha Rifles showed extraordinary valor, posthumously earning the Victoria Cross (VC), the highest military decoration for gallantry in the face of the enemy. Today, the ridge is visited for its historical memory, war monument, and wide views over the Sammarinese and Italian hills.

The climate is typical of the Apennine foothills, with warm summers and cool, breezy winters. Spring and early autumn are the best seasons to visit the ridge and walk the trails.
