Derniere Riviere

Dennery, Saint Lucia

Why visit Derniere Riviere?

Derniere Riviere is a small, peaceful hamlet located at the southern end of Dennery District, where a river of the same name (French: "Last River") flows eastward toward the Atlantic coast. The settlement is home to a few dozen families who live in scattered wooden houses along the river valley and on the surrounding hillsides. The name reflects its position as the last significant river crossing before the district boundary with Micoud to the south.

The community is primarily agricultural, with residents cultivating bananas, root crops, and small quantities of cocoa and spices. The landscape is defined by the river valley — lush, green, and humid — flanked by steep hillsides covered in tropical vegetation. Birdsong and the sound of running water are the dominant sounds in this tranquil corner of the island.

Derniere Riviere has no tourist infrastructure whatsoever, making it suitable only for adventurous, self-sufficient travellers with an interest in nature, birdwatching, and experiencing the quietest, most unspoiled reaches of Saint Lucia's east coast.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airports are George F. L. Charles Airport (SLU) in Castries (38 km north, ~55 min) and Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) near Vieux Fort (25 km south, ~35 min). Taxis from either cost EC$120–200. No public transport reaches Derniere Riviere directly.

By Car / Road

Derniere Riviere is accessible from the main east-coast highway via a short access road (approximately 2 km) that branches off near the bridge over the river. The village is located roughly 18 km south of Dennery and 12 km north of Micoud. The access road is narrow and in poor condition — a 4x4 or high-clearance vehicle is essential. Driving time from the main road is about 5–10 minutes. No minibuses serve the village.

The hamlet is small and walkable, though paths are unpaved and can be muddy after rain. River crossings may be necessary to reach some houses. Sturdy, waterproof footwear is recommended. There is no local transport of any kind.

What are the things to do?

  • Derniere Riviere River — the scenic river that gives the village its name, flowing through a verdant valley before reaching the coast. The river creates small pools and mini-cascades along its course.

  • River Valley Scenery — the lush, narrow valley is one of the most photogenic natural settings in Dennery District, with towering trees, hanging vines, and dense undergrowth.

  • Coastal Rocks — where the river meets the Atlantic, eroded volcanic rock formations create a dramatic, windswept landscape.

  • River Walks — follow the river upstream through the valley, enjoying the cool shade of the forest canopy and the sound of running water. The walk is gentle and suitable for most fitness levels (1–2 hours round trip).

  • Birdwatching — the river valley and surrounding forest are excellent for spotting Saint Lucia endemic birds, including the Saint Lucia warbler, Saint Lucia peewee, and various hummingbird species. Early morning is best.

  • Nature Photography — the combination of river, forest, and rural scenery offers varied and compelling subjects.

  • Fishing — the river supports small freshwater fish; local boys sometimes fish with hand lines. Ask before joining.
