Petushki
Vladimirskaya oblast', Russia
Why visit Petushki?
Petushki is a small town on the left bank of the Peksha River, approximately 120 km west of Vladimir and 140 km east of Moscow. The town is famous in Russian literature as the setting for Vladimir Vysotsky's satirical poem "The Little Son to the Father" and as the destination of the unnamed narrator in Venedikt Yerofeyev's cult novel "Moscow to Petushki." The town has a population of around 15,000 and sits on the Moscow–Nizhny Novgorod railway line.
Petushki has a continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. The historic centre features a few churches and merchant houses, but much of the townscape is Soviet-era residential buildings. The town's literary fame contrasts with its modest appearance, creating an ironic charm that appeals to Russian literature enthusiasts.
The name "Petushki" literally means "cockerels" or "little roosters," and the town has adopted the rooster as its symbol.
