Why visit Privolzhskaya Lesostep Nature Reserve?
Privolzhskaya Lesostep Nature Reserve (Zapovednik Privolzhskaya Lesostep) is a strict federal ecological reserve in Penza Oblast, Russia. Established in 1989 to preserve virgin northern steppe and forest-steppe boundary zones on the Volga Uplands, the reserve spans 8,426 hectares divided across five non-contiguous clusters: Poperechenskaya Steppe, Ostrovtsovskaya Steppe, Kuncherovskaya Steppe, Borok, and Verkhovya Sury. Protected status on some individual plots dates back to 1919.
The reserve protects unplowed black-earth (chernozem) meadow steppes, pine stands on river terraces, and mossy bogs around the headwaters of the Sura River. The flora includes more than 850 vascular plant species, highlighted by broad expanses of feather grass (Stipa) and wild steppe iris. Wildlife features over 50 mammal species and 160 bird species, including sizable colonies of bobak marmots (Marmota bobak), elk, wild boars, badgers, imperial eagles, and steppe harriers.
The climate is temperate continental. Winters are cold and snowy, with January temperatures averaging -11°C (dropping below -25°C during cold snaps). Summers are warm and relatively dry, with July temperatures averaging +20°C and peak highs reaching +32°C. Because this is a strict nature reserve (zapovednik), independent roaming is prohibited; all access requires a permit from the administrative office in Penza and must take place on designated ecological trails with a guide.
