Belinsky
Penzenskaya oblast', Russia
Why visit Belinsky?
Belinsky is a small town in Penzenskaya oblast', located approximately 160 kilometres west of the regional capital Penza, near the border with Tambov Oblast. The town has a population of roughly 10,000 and is best known as the birthplace of Vissarion Belinsky (1811–1848), one of the most influential literary critics in Russian history. The town was renamed in his honour in 1948, previously bearing the name Chembary (Chembarsky).
Belinsky's history stretches back to the seventeenth century, when it was founded as a frontier settlement. The town grew modestly as a rural centre during the imperial period. Today it retains a quiet, unhurried character, with a small centre, a few churches, and surrounding agricultural landscape. The Belinsky Memorial Museum, dedicated to the famous critic, is the town's main cultural attraction and draws literary pilgrims from across Russia.
The climate is continental, with cold winters and warm summers. The best months to visit are June through September, when the weather is pleasant and the surrounding countryside is green. Belinsky is of interest primarily to those with a connection to Russian literature or a desire to explore lesser-visited provincial towns.
