Malmyzh

Kirovskaya oblast', Russia

Why visit Malmyzh?

Malmyzh is a small town in the southeastern part of Kirovskaya oblast', located near the border with the Republic of Tatarstan approximately 200 km southeast of Kirov. With a population of around 7,000, it is one of the oblast's most remote settlements and sits at the cultural crossroads between Russian and Mari traditions. The town's position on the frontier gives it a distinctive character, with architectural and culinary influences from both cultures visible in the streets and markets.

Malmyzh is surrounded by a landscape of mixed forest, river valleys, and farmland. The Vyatka River flows nearby, and the surrounding area is home to a variety of wildlife including elk, wild boar, and numerous bird species. The town itself is modest — a handful of streets, a few churches, a local museum, and the functional architecture of a Soviet-era agricultural centre. Its appeal lies in its remoteness, its cultural mix, and its position as a base for exploring the oblast's southeastern frontier.

The climate follows the regional pattern: cold winters (−12 to −15°C) and warm summers (18–22°C), with the best visiting window from June to September. The surrounding countryside is scenic in summer and autumn, with rolling farmland, birch groves, and quiet river valleys.
