Sharoy
Chechenskaya Respublika, Russia
Why visit Sharoy?
Sharoy is an old citadel-town in the remote highlands of the Chechen Republic, located deep in the mountainous southern part of the republic. The settlement is one of the most isolated communities in Chechnya, surrounded by dramatic alpine scenery with steep valleys and towering peaks. The name reflects its historical role as a fortified mountain settlement, and remnants of its defensive architecture can still be seen.
Sharoy sits at high altitude in a landscape that has changed little over centuries. The climate is harsh, with long, snowbound winters and short, cool summers. Access is limited to rough mountain roads that can be impassable for months of the year. The town's isolation has helped preserve its traditional character, though it also makes Sharoy one of the most challenging destinations to reach in the Chechen Republic.
For visitors, Sharoy represents the most extreme version of the Chechen highland experience — a remote, historically significant settlement in a landscape of raw mountain beauty. The journey to reach it is itself a remarkable experience, passing through some of the most dramatic scenery in the North Caucasus. However, the challenges of access, limited infrastructure, and the sensitivity of the area mean that visits should be well-planned and ideally arranged through local contacts.

By Car / Road
Sharoy is deep in the Chechen highlands, reachable via the mountain road from Grozny through Shatoy and onward into the mountains. The total journey from Grozny takes several hours, and the final sections of road can be rough, unpaved, and affected by weather. A vehicle with good clearance is essential. The road may be impassable in winter.
Sharoy is a small highland settlement explored on foot. Private vehicles are the only practical means of reaching and departing the area. There is no public transport.
