Why visit Urus-Martan?

Urus-Martan is a town in the Chechen Republic, located in the lowland plain west of Grozny. The town serves as the administrative centre of the Urus-Martanovsky district and has a population of roughly 50,000. Like other settlements in the Chechen lowlands, Urus-Martan was significantly affected during the wars of the 1990s and 2000s, and has been undergoing reconstruction in the years since.

Urus-Martan sits in the fertile plain north of the Caucasus foothills, with agriculture playing an important role in the local economy. The town has a traditional Chechen character, with strong community ties and adherence to customary law (adat) alongside Islamic practice. The climate is continental, with hot summers and cold winters.

For visitors, Urus-Martan offers an authentic view of rural Chechen life, away from the more urbanised centres of Grozny and Gudermes. The town is notable in Chechen history as the home of several prominent Chechen figures and as a centre of traditional culture in the lowland region.
