Mezen

Arkhangel'skaya oblast', Russia

Why visit Mezen?

Mezen is a small subpolar town in the northern part of Arkhangelsk Oblast, located on the banks of the Mezen River approximately 500 km northeast of Arkhangelsk. With a population of roughly 3,000, Mezen is one of the most remote and northerly towns in the oblast, sitting close to the Arctic Circle. The town was founded in the 16th century as a trading post and has served as a base for fishing and fur trading in the White Sea region for centuries.

Mezen's isolation and harsh climate have preserved much of its traditional character. The town features a few historic wooden churches and traditional northern architecture, though many structures are in poor condition. The surrounding landscape is flat tundra and taiga, with the wide Mezen River providing the main transportation corridor. The town is known for its severe winters, with temperatures regularly dropping below -30°C, and its brief but intense summers with nearly round-the-clock daylight.

The Mezen River is one of the few rivers in the oblast that flows northward into the White Sea, and the town historically served as a port for Arctic fishing and hunting expeditions. Today, Mezen remains a quiet, remote community with limited tourism infrastructure but significant atmospheric appeal for travelers seeking authentic northern wilderness experiences.

The road conditions are challenging, especially in spring during rasputitsa (mud season). Local buses connect to nearby towns, though service is very infrequent. In winter, ice roads may provide additional access.

Mezen is a very small town that can be walked in under an hour. Local transport is limited to occasional buses and taxis. The town center and riverfront are within walking distance. For excursions into the surrounding wilderness, organized tours or private transport are necessary.
