Koryazhma

Arkhangel'skaya oblast', Russia

Why visit Koryazhma?

Koryazhma is a small industrial city in northern Arkhangelsk Oblast, located on the left bank of the Northern Dvina River approximately 500 km north of Moscow. The city was founded in 1917 and grew significantly during the Soviet era as a center for pulp and paper production. The Ilim Group operates a large pulp mill here (the Koryazhma subsidiary), which is one of the largest producers of bleached kraft pulp in Russia. With a population of around 35,000, Koryazhma has the character of a remote northern industrial settlement — surrounded by vast taiga forests and accessible primarily by river or air.

The city sits in the subarctic zone with long, severe winters (-20°C to -30°C in January) and short, cool summers (12–18°C in July). The Northern Dvina provides the main transportation corridor through this sparsely populated region. Koryazhma is not a major tourist destination but serves as a gateway for travelers heading to more remote areas of the northern oblast and the Komi Republic.
