Tulcea

Tulcea is a county in Northern Dobruja, in the far east of Romania, with its capital and largest city at Tulcea on the Danube. The county contains most of the Danube Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Biosphere Reserve and one of Europe's largest wetlands, along with the Măcin Mountains — among the oldest mountain ranges in Romania — in its western reaches. Tulcea city, founded in antiquity as the Dacian settlement of Aegyssus, is the main gateway for boat travel into the delta.

Summer is peak season for delta boat trips and birdwatching; many delta lodges and boat services reduce operations in winter.

Tulcea city is the county's transport hub and the departure point for boats into the delta interior, where several communes (Sulina, Crișan, Sfântu Gheorghe) have no road access at all.

Fish dishes such as ciorbă de pește (fish soup) are prominent given the county's Danube and Delta setting, alongside Romanian staples like sarmale (cabbage rolls) and mămăligă (cornmeal polenta).

The Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve is the county's defining attraction, explored by boat from Tulcea city or from delta communes like Crișan and Sulina. The Măcin Mountains National Park offers hiking in the county's west, and historic river towns such as Isaccea (the Roman Noviodunum) and Babadag (with its Ottoman-era mosque) add cultural stops along the Danube.
