Why visit Sovata?

Sovata (Hungarian: Szováta) is a spa town in Szeklerland, located in a hilly area next to the Gurghiu Mountains in eastern Transylvania. Known for its salt lakes, Sovata became a popular health resort during the late 19th and 20th centuries. The geological events of 1875 created Bear Lake (Lacul Ursu), whose helio-thermal salt water is unique in Europe and reputed to have therapeutic effects. Sovata lies at an altitude of 475–530 m and has a population of around 9,700. Three villages are administered by the town: Căpeți, Ilieși, and Săcădat. The town is also on the route of the Via Transilvanica long-distance trail.
