Mureș

Mureș County lies in central Transylvania. Its seat, Târgu Mureș, nicknamed the "city of roses" for its many gardens, holds the Art Deco/Secession Culture Palace (built before World War I as a Hungarian cultural centre), the Teleki Library (founded in the late 18th century, with over 250,000 rare books), and a 17th-century fortress complex. Nearby Sighișoara, about 45 km south, has the best-preserved medieval fortified town centre in Transylvania, built by Saxon colonists from the 12th century.

May through October offers the mildest weather for touring Târgu Mureș and Sighișoara.

Local buses and minibuses connect the main towns within the county. For rural areas, a car is recommended.
