Umm Salal Mohammed
Umm Şalāl, Qatar
Why visit Umm Salal Mohammed?
Umm Salal Mohammed is a small town in the Umm Salal municipality of Qatar, located about 15 km north of Doha. Named after the Al Mohammed branch of the local Al Thani tribe, the town is a popular half-day excursion from the capital thanks to its well-preserved heritage structures and relaxed, small-town pace. Its standout attraction is the Barzan Towers, a pair of late-19th-century watchtowers that were fully restored in 2003 and now offer sweeping views of the surrounding countryside.
The town's focal point is the Umm Salal Fortress, a late-19th-century residence built for Sheikh Jasim Bin Mohammed Al Thani that remains privately inhabited and closed to the public but can be admired from the outside. The area is also notable for prehistoric grave mounds dating to the Dilmun culture (circa 3000 BCE), scattered along the northern edge of the settled area. Umm Salal Mohammed's layout is compact, with most sights within walking distance of one another.
The climate is typical of Qatar: scorching summers (May–October, above 40°C) and mild winters (November–March), with the cooler months being the best time to visit. The town is best treated as a morning or late-afternoon stop, ideally paired with Umm Salal Ali for a full heritage loop.
