Umm Bab
Ash Shīḩānīyah, Qatar
Why visit Umm Bab?
Umm Bab is a small coastal village on Qatar's west coast, roughly 70 km west of Doha. It has a quiet, laid-back character centred on its sandy shoreline and is a popular spot for local families seeking an escape from the capital. The village is sparse — a handful of low-rise buildings, a mosque, and a few basic amenities — but its appeal lies in the natural beach environment and the sense of remoteness. Historically it was a small fishing settlement, and the area remains undeveloped compared to Qatar's east coast.
Like the rest of Qatar, Umm Bab has an arid desert climate with extremely hot summers (June–September, often over 40°C) and mild winters (November–March). The best time to visit is between October and April, when the weather is pleasant for beach outings, camping, and picnics. There are no formal neighbourhoods; the village is compact and arranged along the coast road, with the beach running parallel to the main strip.

By Plane
The nearest airport is Hamad International Airport (DOH) in Doha, about 80 km east. A taxi from the airport costs approximately QR 180–220 and takes about 1 hour via the Dukhan Highway (Q3).
By Car / Road
Umm Bab is accessible via the Dukhan Highway (Q3); take the exit south towards the coast at the Dukhan turn-off. The drive from Doha takes about 50 minutes. Route 104 and 104A buses run from Doha to Dukhan, from where you would need a taxi or private vehicle to reach Umm Bab.
A private car is essential. There is no public transport within Umm Bab, and the village is too spread out to cover on foot in the heat. Ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Karwa may not have drivers available locally, so arrange your own transport or drive yourself.
What are the things to do?
Umm Bab Beach — The main draw: a long, undeveloped stretch of sandy shoreline along the Gulf. The water is calm and shallow near the shore, making it safe for wading. Basic shade structures and informal picnic areas are available. The beach offers clear views of the Saudi coastline across the water on a clear day.
Coastal Flats and Tidal Pools — The shoreline around Umm Bab features wide tidal flats that emerge at low tide. These attract migratory birds during the cooler months, including plovers and gulls, and are interesting for a quiet walk.
Desert Hinterland — Inland from the village, the flat gravel desert stretches westwards. A short drive reveals typical Qatari desert scenery with low scrub and occasional acacia trees.
Beach Picnics — The primary activity. Locals bring tents, barbecues, and camping chairs for day trips. Pack charcoal, food, and water as there are no vendors on site.
Camping — The beach and surrounding flats are popular for free overnight camping. The lack of light pollution makes for excellent stargazing.
Fishing — The shallows off Umm Bab are a known local fishing spot. Bring your own gear.
Swimming — The calm, shallow waters are suitable for a refreshing dip. Watch for sharp rocks and tidal currents.
Photography — The undeveloped coastline with its empty beaches and desert backdrop offers good landscape and sunset photography.
