Dukhan
Ash Shīḩānīyah, Qatar
Why visit Dukhan?
Dukhan is an industrial city on Qatar's west coast, founded after oil was first discovered in the region. Its entire purpose remains tied to the petroleum industry: nearly every resident works for Qatar Petroleum, and oil infrastructure is scattered throughout the town. Much of Dukhan is off-limits to non-residents — two security gates restrict access to all but the police station, a mosque, and a small shopping mall. Photography and video are strictly prohibited in the city and surrounding region.
Despite these restrictions, Dukhan offers the best coastal access on Qatar's western side. The beaches are popular with swimmers, surfers, and picnickers, and the area north of town holds archaeological sites, prehistoric graves, and the quirky Film City movie set. The climate is desert, with very hot summers (May–September) and mild winters (November–March). Visit between October and April for comfortable beach weather.

What are the things to do?
Dukhan Beaches — The main attraction for visitors. The beaches north and south of the Dukhan Water Sports Club are open to the public. Sandy but watch for sharp rocks under the water; 200 m offshore from the southern beach is a rocky reef good for snorkelling. Popular with families for picnics.
Dukhan Masjid — The city's mosque, notable for its large minaret, located near the shopping centre just outside the security gates.
Zekrit (Zekreet) — 14 km north of Dukhan. An ancient village with historic ties to Bahrain. On a small hill are prehistoric graves cut from bedrock; surrounding hilltops have Dilmun-culture burial mounds. Near the beach are excavated foundations of an 18th-century fort and remains of madabes (buildings used for making traditional date food, debis). The shallow inlet is popular with kite surfers.
Film City — Ras Abruq Peninsula, rough dirt track 10 km north of Zekrit. A large building used as a set for a Qatar TV series, plus a small fake village 1 km north. The peninsula is a nature reserve where you may see ostriches, gazelle, and foxes. Free, though a tip for the resident caretaker is appreciated.
Dolphin Reef — An 18-m-deep artificial diving area that attracts dolphins. You need your own boat or can join a guided dive organised through a Doha-based dive group.
Kite Surfing — The shallow inlet at Zekrit is a known spot for kite surfing.
Camping — Popular camping areas south of Dukhan en route to Umm Bab, as well as near Zekrit.
