Lajes do Pico
Região Autónoma dos Açores, Portugal
Why visit Lajes do Pico?
Lajes do Pico sits on the rugged southern shore of Pico Island in Portugal’s Azores archipelago. Established in the 15th century as the island's earliest permanent settlement, the coastal town evolved during the 19th and 20th centuries into the primary hub for Azorean shore-based whaling. Whalers launched wooden open canoes from the harbor to pursue sperm whales using hand harpoons, guided by spotters stationed in clifftop lookout towers.
Commercial whaling ceased in the 1980s following international bans, prompting Lajes do Pico to transition into a leading Atlantic base for marine conservation and cetacean research. Today, travelers visit to observe migratory baleen whales and resident sperm whales in the deep underwater trenches lying just offshore, swim in natural ocean pools carved into black basalt, and tour historic stone boathouses.
Climate
The climate is humid subtropical and maritime, heavily influenced by the Gulf Stream. Winters are mild and windy, with daytime temperatures between 13°C and 16°C and frequent rain showers. Summers are warm and humid, averaging 20°C to 25°C, with lighter rainfall and calm sea conditions ideal for boat expeditions.
