Jose Domingo Ocampos
Caaguazú, Paraguay
Why visit Jose Domingo Ocampos?
José Domingo Ocampos is a district in Caaguazú department, about 97 km from Coronel Oviedo (the departmental capital) and 85 km from Ciudad del Este, on Route PY02. It takes its name from José Domingo Ocampos (1885–1993), an entrepreneur from Guairá who acquired land here in 1950 for timber exploitation; his descendants' company later subdivided the land, driven by demand from the district's proximity to Alto Paraná and the Brazilian border. It was established as a municipality in 1964 and formally became a district in 2005. The local economy has shifted over time from cotton toward soybeans and wheat.
