Menyamya

Morobe, Papua New Guinea

Why visit Menyamya?

Menyamya is a remote district station in the highlands of Morobe Province, located in the steep, forested country south of the Watut River valley. It is the administrative centre for the Menyamya District and serves the isolated Anga (Kukukuku) communities of the region. The Anga people are culturally distinct from the Highlands groups to the west: they are known for their bark-cloth capes, distinctive facial tattooing, and a fearsome warrior reputation that preceded them in colonial times.

Menyamya is one of the hardest places to reach in Morobe Province. The station has an airstrip, a health centre, a market, and a cluster of government buildings. It is visited mainly by medical staff, Lutheran mission workers, and the occasional researcher.
