Ambunti
East Sepik, Papua New Guinea
Why visit Ambunti?
Ambunti is a town on the upper Sepik River in East Sepik Province, located roughly 160 km upstream from Angoram. It is the administrative centre for the Ambunti-Dreikikir District and the last government station of any size before the river enters the remote central Sepik basin. The surrounding population is a mix of Sepik language groups — Iatmül, Abelam, and Kwoma among them — living in stilt villages along the river and in the adjacent hills.
For travellers, Ambunti is the starting point for deeper Sepik exploration: the April River tributary, the central Sepik villages with their celebrated haus tambaran (spirit houses), and the borderlands toward the West Sepik province. The town itself is small (one airstrip, one market, a handful of stores) but it commands an outsized role in Sepik river tourism. The Ambunti area was the setting for much of Margaret Mead's Sepik fieldwork in the 1930s.

By Plane
Ambunti Airport (AUJ) has charter services from Wewak and Port Moresby. There is no scheduled commercial service. Charter cost: K1,500–3,000 per seat.
Ambunti is walkable. River transport by motorised canoe is the only option for reaching surrounding villages and the interior.
What are the things to do?
Sepik River — narrower and faster here than at Angoram, the upper Sepik flows between steep forested banks within sight of the Hunstein Range.
Ambunti Market — small but genuine: sago, smoked fish, betel nut, and carvings from the surrounding villages.
Haus tambaran — several villages near Ambunti preserve magnificent spirit houses with towering gable facades carved in the classic Sepik style.
Multi-day Sepik river journey — typical 3–7 day trips from Ambunti into the central Sepik, visiting Iatmül, Kwoma, and May River villages for dance, carving, and sago-processing demonstrations.
April River boat trip — a major Sepik tributary with clear, blackwater stretches and excellent birdwatching for crowned pigeons, hornbills, and birds-of-paradise.
Birdwatching — the forests of the Hunstein Range behind Ambunti are some of PNG's richest for endemic birds.
