Jabal Samhan Nature Reserve

Why visit Jabal Samhan Nature Reserve?

Jabal Samhan Nature Reserve is a protected mountain area in the Dhofar region of Oman, established in 1997 to protect the critically endangered Arabian leopard. The reserve covers approximately 4,500 square kilometres of the Samhan mountain range, with elevations reaching over 2,100 metres. It is one of the last strongholds of the Arabian leopard in the wild, along with Nubian ibex, Arabian gazelles, and the caracal. The landscape is dramatic — deep limestone canyons, sheer cliffs, and stark plateaus.

The climate is milder than the lowlands — hot in summer but cool in winter, with the khareef (June–September) bringing mist and light rain. The best time to visit is October to March. A 4WD is essential.
