Pegae Hill

Ryangkangto, North Korea

About Pegae Hill

Pegae Hill (Pegaebong) is a forested hill in Ryanggang Province (Ryangkangto), on the Mount Paektu plateau in the far north of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. It lies within the cluster of revolutionary sites surrounding Mount Paektu and is treated in the official North Korean narrative as a place of historical importance connected to the guerrilla campaign and the founding leadership.

For visitors, Pegae Hill is one of the commemorative stops on the Mount Paektu circuit rather than a scenic destination in its own right. It is presented with monuments, slogan-bearing inscriptions and interpretive markers tied to the state account of the Paektu revolutionary history. The setting — coniferous forest on the high, cold plateau — is quiet and atmospheric, and a visit gives insight into how the Paektu landscape is woven into the country's national story.

The hill is on the high northern plateau, so it shares Ryanggang's extreme climate. The practical visiting season is the short summer, roughly late June to early September; winters are severe and snowbound. Pegae Hill is reached only on guided tours of the Paektu region.

How to reach

By Plane

Pegae Hill is visited as part of a Paektu-region tour. Groups generally fly into Samjiyon Airport from Pyongyang, then travel by road.

By Train

By Car / Road

Pegae Hill is reached by road from Samjiyon or other points on the Paektu plateau, in the tour vehicle accompanied by guides, as part of the regional circuit.

At the hill, a short walk on foot from the road brings visitors to the monuments and viewpoints. There is no public transport, taxi service or ride-hailing; movement is always with accompanying guides, and the visit is a brief stop rather than an extended one.

Things to do

  • Pegae Hill revolutionary monuments — the commemorative markers, statuary and inscriptions tied to the official Paektu narrative that form the focus of the visit.
  • Plateau forest setting — the coniferous woodland of the high Paektu plateau surrounding the hill.

The experience at Pegae Hill is a short guided visit to its monuments and the surrounding forest, as one stop within the broader Mount Paektu, Lake Chon and Samjiyon itinerary. It is best understood as part of the wider commemorative circuit of the Paektu region.
