Why visit?

Ryangkangto (Ryanggang Province) is the highest and one of the most remote provinces of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, occupying the country's far north along the Yalu River border with China. Its name means "two rivers", referring to the Yalu (Amnok) and the Tumen, both of which rise in this corner of the peninsula.

The province is defined by altitude and forest. It sits on an elevated plateau ringed by mountains, with extensive coniferous forest, cold lakes and the country's coldest recorded temperatures. Its dominant feature — and the heart of its appeal for travellers — is Mount Paektu, the volcanic peak on the Chinese border that is the highest mountain on the Korean peninsula and a site of profound symbolic importance in North Korean ideology. The crater lake at its summit, Lake Chon, is one of the most striking sights in the country.

For visitors, Ryanggang is the destination for Mount Paektu and its surroundings: the showcase town of Samjiyon, the waterfalls and historic sites of the Paektu area, and the border city of Hyesan. It is reached on guided tours, often by a dedicated charter flight to Samjiyon because of the long overland distances from Pyongyang. The atmosphere is one of cold, clear air, big forests and a strongly commemorative landscape.

When is the best time to visit?

The practical window is short. Late June to early September is the only reliably mild season, when Mount Paektu and Lake Chon are accessible and the summit is most likely to be clear of cloud and snow. Even in summer the high ground is cool. Winters are extreme — Ryanggang regularly records the lowest temperatures in the DPRK — and while the snowscape is dramatic, the area is hard to reach and bitterly cold outside the warm months.

How do you get around?

Travel within the province is by the tour group's vehicle with accompanying guides; independent movement is not possible for foreign visitors. Because of the great distance from Pyongyang and difficult terrain, many tours reach the province by a chartered or scheduled flight into Samjiyon Airport, then travel by road to Mount Paektu, Lake Chon, the Paektu-area sites and Hyesan. Roads in the province are mountainous and journeys can be slow.

Where should you go?

  • Mount Paektu — the volcanic peak on the Chinese border, the highest mountain on the peninsula and the province's centrepiece.
  • Lake Chon — the deep crater lake at Paektu's summit, a dramatic high-altitude sight.
  • Samjiyon — the showcase gateway town for the Paektu region, with monuments and a modern reconstructed centre.
  • Hyesan — the provincial capital and a border city on the Yalu River facing China.
  • Rimyongsu Falls — a scenic waterfall fed by springs, notable for flowing even through the deep winter.
  • Pegae Hill — a commemorative site associated with the official Paektu revolutionary narrative.

What should you eat?

Ryanggang's cooking is shaped by its cold, upland setting. Potatoes thrive in the cool plateau soils and feature heavily — in noodles, dumplings and starchy side dishes — while the forests yield wild mushrooms, berries and game. Cold noodles, kimchi and hearty soups suit the climate. Meals for visitors are arranged through tour hotels and guesthouses rather than independent restaurants.

What is the culture like?

The province's cultural landscape is heavily tied to the official Mount Paektu narrative, with monuments and commemorative sites woven through the Paektu area. Major national anniversaries are marked here as elsewhere in the DPRK.
